Hi, I'm attempting to plant Lily of the Valley bareroots (again) and was wondering what sort of fertilizer, or compost I should use, if any? Last summer I didn't use any, and the plants didn't make it, so I wasn't sure if that was the reason why. I just got 3 rosea bareroots for Mother's Day, but I'm scared to death that once again I will kill them. Also, I have been trying to see what hardness zone I'm in, but the map picture won't show for some reason? I live in the Southeast part of Pennsylvania. Thank you for your time. Have a nice day! If you can tell me your city, or zipcode, then I can find out what zone you are in. There is a wide climate range in your state, so it will be useful to know your exact zone.
When do I plant lilly of the valley seeds?
Here is an article that I hope is helpful. Note that lily of the valley is considered invasive in some areas. You may want to search for a list of prohibited plants in your area. There are state lists and city lists. https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/bulbs/lily-of-the-valley/lily-of-the-valley-seed-pods.htm
How can I make more flowers, they grow well of course, but the flowers are sparse. Thank you for any suggestions. fran
I actually had the same issue with my Lily of the Valley and early this spring made an application of Bone Meal.
The phosphorous can help boost flowering.

Hi, I have a patch of Lily of the Valley in my garden. I love the lilies but there is grass growing in the patch. They are in a sunny location so the lilies grow slowly and the grass grows quickly. What can I use to kill the grass without killing the lilies? Thanks, Tim
You can spot spray or paint on a grass killer herbicide like Monsanto RoundUp or Dow Rodeo, but any overspray or drift will affect the lilys.
The only other way is manual removal; yes down and dirty, dig and pull.
Is it possible to use the seed pods to propagate new plants? How would I do this? Thank you. Joyce
The easiest way to propagate lily of the valley is to separate a plant or two from the original clump. This is best done in early spring. Growing from seed is not as simple. Here is an article that explains the process. https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/.../lily-of-the-valley/lily-of-the-valley- seed-pods.htm
It is now August and my lily of the valley have long since flowered. A neighbor wants me to cut off the leaves so that the garden is more attractive. Is that a good idea?
It is recommended you allow the plants to die back naturally.

My neighbors have them in their gardens and they have now overrun mine.
