Is it possible to plant Japanese maples in Florida?
I live in Zone 5. It's a very small (10" tall) Hiyo Kime Japanese maple. Should I bring it into my garage (it never gets below 40 degrees), bury the container in a pile of mulch, or just leave it out?
You can either bring it into the garage or bury it in leaves. If you bring it into the garage, just make sure to water it about once a month. It will be dormant, so it will not need much water, but it will need some.
Is it necessary that I water a Japanese Maple in a container during winter? If so, how much, how often, etc. ?
Yes. You want to water them at least once a month to prevent them from drying out completely.
I have a 15-yr-old Japanese maple, whose bark is cracking and falling off at the base (from the ground to about 3ft up) to where the branches start to spread. The leaves all look fine and color is good. Should we worry about this? It is in a well ventilated area - no other trees or buildings are near it.
Some varieties of maple do have "peeling" barks and are grown for this feature. It is a feature that often takes years to develop, so it is possible this is the case with yours. As long as it looks healthy and you do not see any signs of fungus or mold (it will look like a powdery substance), you should not have to worry about the tree.
I have a Japanese maple that I grew from an off spring seedling. My landscaper kept it safe for the winter and I planted it in my garden about 3 years ago. Amazing how much it has grown-just close to 6'. Every year it has had the beautiful red color that people love about these trees. This spring, however, it started out red and now is a greenish color. Just recently a new growth sprung in it deep red. Any idea why my tree is green?
Have you tried using a soil acidifier ? Miracle- Gro should help.
Leaves are curling at the ends and dying off. Pruned entire tree, leaves grew back normally, but are now curling at the ends once more. . . not all branches grew new leaves after pruning.
It sounds like eitehr a watering issue or a fungus. Increase water to the tree and treat the tree with a fungicide. You may also want to check the roots to see if they are healthy. If the roots have been damaged, this could affect the tree's ability to take up water, which would make it look as though it were under watered.
When should you prune an acer (japonicus)? Also, my orchid leaves are all wilting, so have I overwatered?
Maples are usually best pruned in late summer/early fall, though may be done in early spring when necessary.
It is possible that the orchid was overwatered. They really should be allowed to dry out some between waterings. Here is more information on the signs to look for with overwatering: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/environmental/signs-of-plants-affected-by-too-much-water.htm
