When should you prune an acer (japonicus)? Also, my orchid leaves are all wilting, so have I overwatered?

Maples are usually best pruned in late summer/early fall, though may be done in early spring when necessary.

It is possible that the orchid was overwatered. They really should be allowed to dry out some between waterings. Here is more information on the signs to look for with overwatering: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/environmental/signs-of-plants-affected-by-too-much-water.htm
