I have a small variety of succulents/indoor plants that I have struggled with in terms of finding the right pot size and using the right soil. I noticed that when I first potted them, they seemed to outgrow the pots I had placed them in since they were growing at a much more rapid pace than I anticipated. I found myself repotting them more than I probably should have because of the size or because the plant didn’t seem to adjust to the soil I had used. How do I know if I’m using the right potting mix for my plants and how do I know what size pot to use for each one? I try to take into consideration each individual plant and it’s need but I find it hard to really know.
Your pots look fine. The most important thing when repotting is not to move the plant to a pot more than 1 or 2 sizes larger. If the container is too large, the excess soil can hold moisture, causing root rot.
Regarding soil, make sure it is well draining. You can always add perlite to increase drainage.
For most houseplants, regular potting soil is fine. For specialized plants such as orchids, cacti and succulents, African violets, etc., use a commercial mix especially for those plants. Or you can make your own with regular potting soil, perlite, sand, coir, etc., mixed. You can find soil recipes on our database http://www.gardeningknowhow.com or on other plant websites.
HELLO, IM PARTIALLY SIGHTED AND ABIT CONCERNED ABOUT ONE OF OUR FLOWERING JAD PLANTS. THEY SEM VERY STRINGY (LONG THIN) DONT KNOW IF WE SHOULD TRY TO REPOT OR LEAVE IT AS IT IS THANK YOU JACK
I would leave it. This is stress, and likely the roots have not filled out the container. The plant will appreciate more light, if possible, and the soil should dry out some between waterings.

WE WERE EXCITED ABOUT THIS AND WONDERED IF SHE CAME FROM A MOTHER PLANT AS WE TOUGHT JADES DONT FLOWER TILL MAYBE 10/15 YEARS. WHEN SHE GROWS BIGGER SHOULD WE GOONE SIZE UP FROM THIS ONE.? DO YOU THINK SHE HAS A GOOD CHANCE OF GROWING BIGGER. AND IS THERE ANYTHING WE SOULD DO, WE DONT WATER THEM OFTEN. AFRAID OF ROOT ROT. THE POTS ARE NOT SOGGY. DRY.. I WASNT SURE HOW I COULD REPLY TO YOU SO IVE HAD TO DO IT THIS WAY. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP
I still say as I have said, before. It is lacking light, severely. I would not pot it up, and would opt for a brighter spot. The flowering is from stress, as it should not be doing so. It is unhappy in its current location.
Repotting will only add to the stress, so do not do that. You may feed it with a half strength liquid fertilizer, but do not repot.

diameter at the top and 5" diameter at the bottom and is 9" tall. The jade plant from the dirt is approximately 11" tall. Is there a better-type pot to use? Today I noticed that one stalk from the main branch appears to be leaning and several leaves on another part of the plant are slightly wrinkled. Based on what I am reading, the plant is getting too much water and not enough! How tall should the new pot be? Should I be looking for a shorter but wider pot? I know to let let approximately 1 inch of the top soil to be dry before watering it. How thoroughly should I water it each time. Also should the plant be facing in a certain direction near a window?
Only go up one or two pot sizes when repotting. I would go with a shorter pot, if the roots aren't as far down as the water holes in the bottom of the pot you have now. Generally, if a leaf is wrinkled, it needs more water. If you can remember to, turn the container 1/4 turn each week so all sides of the plant face the light.

be taken after bringing inside??
If your plant had not been watered recently and it has good, fast draining soil, it should be OK. If however, it is not draining quickly and soil still seems saturated in a day or two, I suggest repotting in fresh cactus soil and not watering again for a couple weeks.

What I do to get my jade plant to grow bigger

Plant is heavy in pot and I don't want to break up the pot and find that the roots are not the problem. Color is beautiful but afraid that it might be an indicator of a problem. I can't remember if leaves have always been small and this color but wrinkling has been recent.
Jade plants will appreciate a repotting about every 5 years, as a mature plant. If this has been in the same pot for longer than that, then it may be time to give it a new pot. You can give it a larger container, or you can divide the plant in pot into two containers.
What is likely happening is a constricted root system is not allowing proper hydration. Along with this, soil nutrients will be low, as well as hard to obtain nutrients from due to the constriction.
