I have a new variety of hydrangea that blooms on old and new wood. Last year I got only a few blooms, so far this year I have no blooms but very lush foliage and lots of growth. I live in NH in zone 3. The bush gets dappled sun all day long.

I planted a very small "labelle" hydrangea with only one bloom 4 years ago. It has never bloomed again. The leaves are lush and the plant grows larger every year. I don't know if it is supposed to bloom on old or on new wood. I have given it fertilizer but I don't know if I ever gave it phosphorous as you mentioned. I never noticed if the plant dies down to the ground in winter. Can you suggest some remediation? Thank you, Dolores

Budleia has not flowered this summer.
Buddleia is pruned in the South either late fall or early spring. In snowy weather areas, the plant dies back to 9 inches or so depending on how cold your region gets. Pruning back is done while it is dormant. Normally, I recommend dead=heading to keep it blooming and make the shrub, in my opinion, look better. Did it grow well this year? I've never heard of a butterfly bush not blooming. Have you looked for aphids or other pests at the branch tips where blooms would be expected? Is it getting enough sun or have other shrubs and trees grown enough to shade it now? Hydrangea pruning depends on the type of hydrangea you have. You can send a long a picture if you didn't keep the plant tag. Links below discuss care of these 2 plants.

What should I do
You should prune the leaves. It will not kill the plant and will let the flowers breath.
My hydrangeas are big and healthy but no blooms. Also one of them has large dark brown spots on the leaves and are falling off of the stem. Is this normal

This tree is at least 7 years old and has always bloomed normally. This year the blooms grew to normal size but no petals are forming- they look like they're made of plastic. Am including a picture. Is it a result of chemical use do you think? I have to spray the photinias (located behind this tree) with antifungal spray- daconil, to prevent black spot.
I have never seen this happen before... So these will produce two flower types. The less conspicuous fertile flower, and the larger infertile (but attracts the pollinators) flower.
Yours is only producing fertile flowers... Very strange indeed. This could be a response to daconyl, but this is unlikely unless you are using way above the recommended dosage.
This is something that is not well documented, and that I don't see much information on. When you stop using daconyl, you can observe whether conspicuous flowers return or not.
My hydrangeas are growing beautifully, but they don't bloom. I haven't pruned them. What can I do to get them blooming. I see hydrangeas blooming profusely in untended gardens of empty houses. What am I doing wrong, or what am I not doing right? Thank you!
This article goes over all the reasons a hydrangea might not be blooming. It should have the information you need.
