I live in Richmond, VA and have fairly large areas of mature ivy (likely English). The areas with shade are doing well, the area with more sun, in the last year or so, has been invaded by honeysuckle (I believe the Japanese type, no blossoms). Any suggestions how to better control it, without removing the mature ivy it is embedded in? I just used a weed wacker to get the upper layer off, but this also takes much of the ivy. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thank you, Tom Flynn

How far away from a stockade fence do I plant Honeysuckle so that it will catch onto the fence? The plant is about 6-8" tall now. I want it to grab the fence and spread out.
I would plant the honeysuckle 6-12 inches away from the fence.

I just planted two honeysuckle vines about 5 feet apart and am wondering what type of support(s) I should install to allow them to grow. There is a stone wall behind them about 6 feet tall but I do not want them to cover the wall. They are planted about 2 feet away from the wall. Trellis? Arbor? One trellis or two? Don't know which way to go. Help please!!
Arbor or trellis, one large trellis or two trellises- any of these options would work - it's basically boils down to your personal taste. I would google arbors and trellises and see if anything catches your eye - there are so many different styles from which to choose. You could have an arbor that is 5 feet apart and train a vine on each end. But, it's all according to what you like. :)
Honeysuckle lost fragrance this year. It bloomed flowers with no smell. Last year fragrance filled the air.
If there are less blooms, there may be less fragrance.
Environmental causes, nutrition, pollination and pruning can all effect the health of the plant.

How do I start roots on a cutting before planting? A friend gave me some cuttings of her honeysuckle plant (yellow blooms). It will be planted near an arbor where it can climb, along with a sparse climbing rose. How do I get it to root first?

Every year as the buds appear on my honeysuckle vine, the leaves fall off and the buds die. It looks great in spring with lots of leaves then just before buds open, leaves fall off and only a couple of buds open. The plant it bare now.
There are a few different reasons why this could be happening. Adequate lighting and moisture are priority for honeysuckle so be sure its getting plenty of both. Certain varieties flower at different times, you may have a late bloomer. Its also possible that its just its age, less than 3 years old may not be mature enough to flower.
