I have two forsythia bushes that didn't need trimming after they bloomed, so I didn't do it. But now, they're out of control since we had a lot of rain and I want to know if I can trim some of these very overgrown branches. I am afraid if I do, they will never bloom again. I live in Zone 5.
Pruning is usually limited to spring after flowering; however, a light trim in the fall will not harm the shrub. It will simply inhibit the flowering of next season's blooms. I trimmed back my Forsythia late last year and I hardly got any flowers this spring. This was the first year I didn't get a lot of flowers. I do believe I did something incorrect. Did I trim back too much, or too late, or what? Any hint (like your article on Lilacs) would be of great help.

I know now is not the best time of year to prune my forsythia that is a border hedge. But it is too tall to maintain. Can I trim it back to 4 inches and start over now without killing it. And also, can I plant some shoots from trimming to speed up the regrowth?

Cuttings are generally taken in spring, but you could always try to force some indoors and see how it goes. You never know, you might have some luck, as some people have.
How much shade will forsythia take?
These shrubs need at least 6 hours of sun in order to flower well.
