What is this?!
It appears to be a green striped Zucchini. There are many hybrids of this vegetable.
Do European cucumbers do well to make bread and butter pickles?
Cucumbers grown for pickling will yield the best product. The skin is less bitter than slicing cucumbers and they have smaller and fewer seeds.
European Cucumbers are used frequently for pickling.
I have a greenhouse and my plants look like they are doing really good. However, my cucumber plants' leaves are turning yellow. I also saw two tiny cucumber starts, but they are yellow too. I am using a soaker hose in the boxes and since cucumbers need lots and lots of water, I have them on a timer for 10 min a day every two days. Am I over-watering these or not enough? It's hard to tell. I am attaching a couple pictures. These are Diva cucumbers so they don't need the male flower. Besides that I have a TON of bees in the greenhouse.... What am I doing wrong? Over-watering or Under-watering?? Thanks! Sharon
It appears that the yellowing is caused by a lack of nitrogen. Apply a nitrogen-rich fertilizer to fix the yellow leaves. Under-watering will appear as wilted leaves, and over-watering will often cause rotting, and brown or black spots. Is there a change of the nutrients found in cucumbers when they are picked green from when they turn yellow if not used right away, and are they safe to eat after they turn yellow?
It has definitely undergone some nutrient change, but this is not harmful. This is natural for it to turn yellow once it is over-mature. They are still safe to eat, but the seeds will be fully mature, and no longer soft. You could still use the cucumber but save the seeds for planting.

Hello, I just planted cucumber seeds three days ago and it has already grown 2 to 3 inches above the soil and 2 inch roots. I didn't expect it to germinate and be off this size in three days. I also didn't expect my 9/10 seeds to survive. I have 12" pots but wanted to find out how many of the plants can be placed in a single pot. If I can have more then one, how much distance do they need to be separated.
One 12 inch pot will hold one plant best, but two may survive in one. It would just produce fewer fruits with more than one in a pot that size. Here is an article for more information: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/vegetables/cucumber/cucumbers-in-containers.htm
If these are regular sprawling cukes, put only 1 plant per pot. There is no way a 12 inch pot will hold enough moisture for 2 mature cucumber plants on a hot day. 12 inches doesn't tell me how deep the pot is but it sure sounds small for even one, in my opinion. But cluster the small pots together so bees can pollinate the flowers. How about 5 gallon buckets from the hardware store. Don't forget to drill holes for excess water to drain and air to enter.
Best time to plant tomato plants;plant cucumbers; plant green beans. college station
Tomatoes and cukes do not like cool overnight temps. Wait until night-time temps are over 50 and daytime temps are at least 70. These crops love hot weather. So go by weather and not dates although you can easily search for your frost-free date(there are three college stations in the US). Wait about 2 weeks after that date to put out cukes and toms. Green beans are best grown from seed planted outdoors after your frost-free date. They germinate and get established rapidly. Transplanting slows them down.
My whole cucumber crop is ruined. All cucumbers have a hole and they start rotting. The vine itself is healthy and the cucumbers are mostly looking good, except every single one has a hole. Please see the attached pics.
I am inclined to believe that this is a fungal infection, likely brought on by a pest. The best thing I could recommend is reconditioning your soil with dolomitic lime, and wettable sulfur during the off season. This will kill most infections within the soil, as well as correct very common cucumber deficiencies.
