I am trying to grow full size veggies at home . I have a plot of dirt about 3 feet wide by 15 feet in length and 2 feet high. The dirt consists of bags of planting mix(miracle grow) and several bags of deodorized manure. I recently harvested best and once again the roots where really small. The largest being the size of a large marble. I fed the plants with fish fertilizer 5.1.1. What am I doing wrong? Had the same issues when I tried to grow carrots and green onions in the past. The tops of the beets and carrots look good, but when I harvest them, they are beyond miniature. Thank you for any pointers you can give me.
There are a few issues that could be going on here. First, if you are growing in planting bags, the soil in the bags could be heating up and stunting the growth of the roots. This often happens with black or dark-colored planting bags. Second, the soil may be drying out between waterings, which could cause the roots to have difficulty expanding in the soil. Try watering more deeply to correct this. Third, carrots are susceptible to a disease called root knot nematode, which can make the roots small and also deformed:

Is there something that I can use when panting my carrots? Seems weeds grow faster than they do.
This time, it will be best to hand pull them. You can prepare the soil during the off season by placing plastic over the soil, which will heat up and kill off any seeds that are not supposed to be there. This way, when you go to plant, it will be much easier to control.

Root vegetables (carrots, onions, radishes, etc.) do not produce well in my raised garden bed. Why?
This could depend on the type soil that you have, and your area. Can you please include photos and more information about your area? I will be more than glad to help.
I've tried for several years now to grow carrots but have had no luck. I've tried sowing directly and also starting them before transplant. Every time, they germinate wonderfully and get to about 2 inches before shriveling up and dying. What am I doing/not doing that makes this keep happening?

Hi there, I have a black swallowtail butterfly that has been on my carrot leaves for 24 hours. I read that these butterflies are attracted to carrots to lay eggs, which hatch & become caterpillars that eat the carrot leaves. I want to save my carrots and the future caterpillars. Is there anything I can do? Can I pick them off and move them to another plant nearby? Or are my carrots toast? Thank you!
I just had a monarch caterpillar devour a small swamp milkweed plant. It is now curled up inside the top leaves which it had cut down. There are a variety of plants that service black swallowtails. Be sure to plant some extra dill, for instance, and move caterpillars over there. Here is an article on host plants for these butterflies. There are very few that they are able to digest for food but they aren't as restricted as the monarch which must have milkweed. http://www.ecosystemgardening.com/what-did-black-swallowtails-eat-before-we-brought-in-parsley-dill-and-queen-annes-lace.html
the carrot without sun grew more? Though it was yellow it measured 7 centimeters while the other only grew 2 centimeters. The one in the closet was taller then the one outside.
I made an experiment and the one without sunlight gew more than the one with sunlight.
