Today is Nov. 7. Is it too late to repot my cactus that has tiny buds on it? The soil it's in is the same soil that it was in when I bought it and is hard as a rock.
Cactus do prefer to be snug in their containers, but if the cactus has not been repotted in a few years or is showing signs of roots coming out of the pot, it may be time to refresh the plant.

I am a college student and at a recent function they were giving out small cacti in pots. I took a few home and soon discovered they A) had no root system but were just placed on the soil and B) were in regular gardening soil, not cactus soil - so they had little drainage. How can I best get them rooted and healthy once again? One has already died (it shriveled up, it looks as if it got too dry), and I don't know how to save the poor little things. A friend recommended a partially dampened sponge to allow them to root, so right now I have them on a partially-dampened paper towel.
You may have been given 'pups' or off shoots of a larger cactus plant.
This would be why they do not have any root system at this time.
The link below will help you with starting these new cactus.

Help, my cactus is drying out. Ever since moving my cactus into the hallway, one arm of the cactus is drying out. I live in the UK, so the temperature is not so warm. Usually, the cactus lives in the front room with lots of light. I have since moved it back to its usual position but am worried the cactus is going to die. It's about 2 metres in height with 3 arms. The good thing is one arm has a new shoot! Please help me I've had this cactus 8 years and don't want to loose it! Many thanks Kelly
It could have suffered damage in the move.
Also check the watering. Too much water could cause root rot.
Fungus or disease can also cause the brown or soft spots.

I had a hanging cactus or succulent for years. It finally died. It looked like a hanging cactus with spines, but did require more water than a cactus. Also, when it hung long enough, it produced little cactus plants on the ends of the hanging strands of cactus. It was given to me by a friend about 25 years ago and I felt terrible to lose it. Is there a chance I can replace it? I have no photographs.
There are so many different hanging cactus or succulents that it is very hard to make an identification from your description.
Here are some links and articles that may help.

My coral cactus was doing very well. The past few days I noticed one side feels a little rubbery compared to the rest of the plant. The rest feels firm and prickly. What is happening? Thank you
It sounds very much like root rot.
Over watering is the most likely reason.
The soil should dry out between watering.

I have a cactus with an orange pumpkin looking flower on top, but the orange thing is rotting. It had 2 smaller balls on it as well. Can I plant the little balls because the big one is rotting? .
You have two options with those two small healthy pups. You can pot them up:

or you could try grafting them onto to another cactus:

What to do with blooms that died on plant for sunset cactus? Do I remove them or wait for drop of blossoms? My sunset cactus has finished blooming and has all dead blossoms are drying and not falling. Do I take off or let them do naturally? Thank You
The answer is either or. You may gently remove them, however, they will eventually drop naturally.
