I purchased 6 beautiful 4" potted plants and want to plant them where they will grow well. I have a north facing house where the front yard plants have only 6 hrs of filtered sun each day, or a side yard facing west that has 10 hours of full sun a day, with some shade from trees, adobe soil, which I continually extend and 90-110 degree heat from July thru Sept. In pots? Inside? Outside?
My best suggestion (?) is to do a search for a Begonia Society for your area. YOu will get the best advice possible from them. An example would be:
Begonia Society, Tempe, AZ
I have about 50 trailing begonias in pots and baskets. Is it possible to keep them until next year and replant them?
Pot-grown begonia plants can be stored in their containers as long as they remain dry. They should also be relocated to a protected area that’s cool, dark and dry. Some begonias can simply be brought indoors prior to the onset of cold weather for continual growth. This article will help with growing them indoors: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/flowers/begonia/begonias.htm
I have some trailing and nonstop begonias, both prolific flowerers, but are now looking a bit straggly. Do Ii need to overwinter these before taking cuttings, or is it possible to do them now? Please also tell me the safest and easiest method of doing this.
Most cuttings are taken in spring but plants can also be divided while dormant. For tips on overwintering, here is an article that you may find helpful: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/flowers/begonia/wintering-begonias-overwintering-a-begonia-in-cold-climates.htm
Will a begonia in a hanging basket be ok with salt spray?
If watered frequently with clean water, it should be ok. The non-salt water will work to leech away any salt that may make its way into the container. Just make sure that you water regularly and generously.
I have planted five giant bloomed begonia bulbs for the past three seasons and understand they can be divided either in the fall or spring to increase their number. How is this done?
Divide begonias while dormant or when the shoots are still small. Simply dig up the plant clumps and gently pull the corms apart either by hand or you can use a knife or spade shovel. Then replant elsewhere. Here is more information on how to divide plants: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/garden-how-to/propagation/propgen/dividing-plants.htm
My indoor strawberry begonia leaves get black spots. Then the leaves turn yellow and dry up. I remove the leaves as soon as the spots appear but it doesn't solve the problem. What is it? What do I do?
It sounds like it has a fungus. This is caused by poor air circulation and high humidity. With this plant, I would recommend increasing air flow to help the problem. You can either move it somewhere with more air movement or place a fan near it. It will also help to treat it with some fungicide.
I have several tuberous begonias (angel wings, etc. ) that I had been growing in pots outside all summer. Will they continue to grow in the house over winter like my wax begonias do? If so, what kind of care do they need?
It is possible, but the tuberous ones do not take as well to the indoors as the other kinds and need extra light and humidity. These articles will help you:
