it was a house plant with small leaves but growing up the tree about 6 feet they are very large like plate size

It may cause an issue if the pruning isn't kept up. If it gets out of control, the root system could, potentially, choke out your tree as well.

With proper care, this can work, but I would not recommend it , personally.
