Q.Why Is My Muscadine Vine Growing Roots Above Ground?

Why is my Muscadine vine growing numerous roots along the branch well over a foot above the soil? The leaves are beginning to yellow and the grapes are shriveling! I have lost several large branches this year. No evidence of pests or leaf damage. Was 100% healthy last year. The roots are over a foot long! Nearby plants are Passion Fruit vines and Elderberry. The Muscadine vines are nearly 30 years old and have never had this problem before. Should I try to keep the roots wet or bury them?

Those are aerial roots and pose no harm. You do not need to cover or remove them. However, they can signal stress in the grapevine, such as winter injury. This article will help you check for other problems:
