When and How Should I Prune Bougainvillea

Question

I bought a bougainvillea last year and had it in a large pot, and it did very nicely. This year I would like to plant it in the ground, so it has room to grow and climb. I’m told that I should prune it to get more blooms and growth. Is this true and, if so, what should I prune, how much and is now a good time?
