Q.What Has Killed My Ornamental Tree This Year?

Zone oshawa on | Anonymous added on June 22, 2021 | Answered

This tree has red berries that birds do NOT eat. This spring it came into full leaf then leaves began to turn brown, wither and fall off. I found a small larva in great numbers on every leaf. I sprayed with soap and water but it was too late. The tree stands now 12 feet high without a leaf.

Not knowing what kind of tree it is, I can only speculate. But if the larva caused it to defoliate, it should regrow. Caterpillars rarely kill a tree. Be vigilante when it regrows and start treatment early if you see any more critters.
