s rich which may be part of the problem. Should we thin it out this fall, next spring? Chelsea chop in the spring? Will the leggyn ess diminish over time? We were hoping for something low maintenance and wildlife friendly.

Legginess can be caused by not enough sun, too fertile soil, and/or too much water. You can cut them back by one-half this fall or spring. Make sure they have gone to seed before cutting back. You also can mow them. If you see a lot of weeds or weed trees, thin those out. These articles should help:
