Almost all grass has a hard time growing in the shade, but zoysia has a harder time with it.

The zoysia will ultimately crowd out the quack grass, as long as the zoysia is thick and healthy. Quack grass does not deal well with competition.

New plugs are always more delicate, but once Zoysia has taken hold, it's a really tough grass and your rotary mower will do just fine. As for the ragged appearance? I don't think you'll see a difference. Zoysia has a different texture from other lawn grasses and placing one next to the other may account for the ragged appearance.

You should fertilize zoysia in late spring and mid summer. It does not need to be fertilized more often than that.

Use a 20-5-10 for fertilizing your zoysia.
