We just had zoysia installed in our yard and it is filled with weeds and has developed brown spots. We do have two dogs, but the yard is watered 3 times a week, diluting any dog urine on the grass. Help! Our new lawn looks awful.

May 28, 2011Q.Regarding Zoysia Grass
We have zoysia grass and recently fertilized with a crabgrass preventer. Prior, we had the lawn thatched. Always have used the same fertilizer and now the zoysia seems to be having trouble taking a nice green effect. We have large patches of dried up grass. Any help in solving this problem - the zoysia basically looks like it is dying.

I have some zoysia grass in my front yard, but my backyard is in mostly in the shade all day and bare in small places all over. It is also bumpy where there is no grass. Can I place zoysia grass in the backyard in shaded area, and would it grow there?

Certified ExpertA.Almost all grass has a hard time growing in the shade, but zoysia has a harder time with it.

Last year my zoysia grass grew beautifully. This year, the grass along my curb is practically all gone and I have large patches of missing grass on a large section of my front lawn. I've tried thatching it with a rake to aerate it, but nothing is happening. Thanks

Certified ExpertA.The zoysia will ultimately crowd out the quack grass, as long as the zoysia is thick and healthy. Quack grass does not deal well with competition.

My neighbor says you can't use rotary mower on zoysia grass because it will pull it up or give it a very ragged appearance. Is this true?

June 9, 2011A.New plugs are always more delicate, but once Zoysia has taken hold, it's a really tough grass and your rotary mower will do just fine. As for the ragged appearance? I don't think you'll see a difference. Zoysia has a different texture from other lawn grasses and placing one next to the other may account for the ragged appearance.

Certified ExpertA.You should fertilize zoysia in late spring and mid summer. It does not need to be fertilized more often than that.
Use a 20-5-10 for fertilizing your zoysia.
