I am planting 4 umbrella plants. How close together should they be?
I would space them 18-24" apart.

My umbrella tree is slowly losing leaves. They turn brown and fall off. I transplanted it about a month and 1/2 ago to a bigger pot (not too big). When I first brought it home, it was losing leaves like crazy. So I transplanted and it seems to have slowed down losing the leaves. I have it in an east window with all my other plants, and I water it when it is almost dry. The plant is about 12 inches tall. What am I doing wrong? I've been growing plants for about 30 years, so I am surprised with this one.
If it was losing leaves right away, it may have arrived suffering some stress.
Your watering sounds correct, but make sure the soil is not draining to quickly.
Look carefully for signs of bugs or insects.

My umbrella plant is dying. The leaves turn brown on the edges, then die. It is not in direct sunlight and does not get overwatered. I water about once or twice a month. Can you help?
Brown spots and edges in houseplants typically are caused by watering issues. I would first check to see if the plant is rootbound, which could prevent the roots from taking up water. That is most likely the cause. Additionally, it could be a fungus or even pests. Neem oil can help for both of these. My new umbrella pine turned completely brown. Would it ever come back if I pruned it back? I put the umbrella in a large pot because I wasn't quite sure where to plant it. I wanted to find a place that has afternoon shade and enough morning sun. I put it on the morning sun side of the house. It began to turn brown even though I put it in some planting mix with a lot of organic matter and watered it fairly evenly without over watering it. When it began to turn brown, I noticed some new growth that was green but it even turned brown. Is there hope or is it completely gone?
It is hard to say what actually caused the plant to turn brown.
It could have been stressed from leaving the garden center, fungus issue, insects, over watering, sun scorch to name a few reasons.
Generally a garden center will guarantee a plant for the first year. I would see if they would replace the tree.

What is the pine cone looking thing growing on my plant? Thanks.
This is the plant actually blooming.
This is fairly rare for this plant so enjoy and great job!

If I keep my umbrella tree trimmed to a max height, does this keep the root system under control?
Pruning will not keep the roots from growing. Your plant may be to be repotted once a year.

Can I sterilize my ornamental umbrella tree with a systemic rather than spraying? My 3 multi-trunk 18' tall umbrella trees are 14 yrs old. They bear clusters of ornamental fruit that drop and are very messy. Years ago we used to put something in the ground to prevent ornamental plum and olive trees from bearing fruit and it really worked well. I prefer to use a systemic for prevention rather than spraying the clusters when they emerge. I live in Zone 24, Channel Islands Beach, Oxnard, CA. I am 500' from the shoreline. I do not have any "food plants" in my yard, nor do my neighbors.
I would do a Google search for granular forms of Sterilization chemicals. You should be able to find a source that can ship direct to you.
Here is a link about this procedure, though it can be a difficult and time specific.
