I have a 20' x 15' plot which held a play structure until it reached the end of its service life. The structure is down and I am converting this area to a vegetable garden. I've pulled up the weed barrier, but there is still about 6 - 10" of pine wood chip mulch. Can I simply rototill this into the soil? Will the pine wood chips interfere with the vegetables we want to grow next spring? Is there anything I can mix in while rototilling that will accelerate the decomposition of the pine wood chips?
Have you considered removing the chipped pine and using it as a mulch elsewhere? It involves a bit of labour and some expense perhaps depending on where you live but it may improved vegetable growth and productivity if you import some fresh soil high in organing matter plus add any composted material you have already. Just some thoughts. Good luck. ?
What is the best season to start planting shrubs and flowers? I am about to embark on a new gardening project. With no real experience with gardens, I have been very successful with obtaining beautiful floral balconies. However, I will soon start to work on my son's garden and would like to know what can be done over the autumn and winter months - Currently there are several shrubs in the garden but I would like to plants some perennials and cover a wall (approx. 5 meters long). Any general advice would be appreciated.
It sounds like a wonderful garden project and we would love to help you get started.
Fall is a great time to plant shrubs and perennials. Make sure the plants receive plenty of water to become established before they go dormant for winter.

I want to do do some edible gardening in my backyard. Will it attract snakes??
A garden won't necessarily attract snakes. If you have snakes in your area they may be found in your garden, but they may be there to help you by eating pests, insects and other rodents.

Is it better to run my vegetable rows N to S or E to W?
You can plant your row either direction!
You can even run the rows diagonally, or even plant in squares.

I'm starting a small garden in my backyard to grow herbs and such for medical purposes and I don't know what soil to use. I dug out a square plot within my grass backyard and I built a wooden border to separate the grass from the garden. To keep everything as organic as possible I don't want to use the dirt that lies in the plot at the moment, as I fear the years of fertilizer and other chemicals that's been seeping into the dirt will have a bad effect on the plants. As this is my first time, I do not know what mixture to use or basically what to do at this point. Advice would be very helpful, thank you!
What a great gardening project!
You may not need to replace the soil, but only amend it for the best start to a new garden.
You should start with a soil test.
This is the only way to know what is really going on in the soil.
Your local County Extension Office can help you with a soil test for a small fee.
I'm listing a link to help you locate your nearest office and several articles that will help you get started with your Herb garden!
