The roots on my smoke bush have pushed upward. Should I keep covering with dirt when they surface again?
Is there a reason for the root exposure? Heavy rain, flooding, soil erosion?
The root system of a Smoke Tree is quite fibrous. You can add soil with some organic amendments to cover exposed roots. Apply 3 to 4 inches of hardwood mulch to help hold soil in place. Avoid the mulch touching the trunk of the tree.
When does a smoke tree begin to show signs of life in the spring? Most of my shrubs are beginning to show signs of life (April 14th) but new smoke tree planted 3 weeks ago is still dormant 2. when can I plant caladium bulbs?
Your in growing zone 6b. The average last from date is April 15, and you mention your other plants are waking up.
The ground is very cold still and a new planting will take time to wake up and become established.
The planting hole should be dug 2 to 3 times wider then the pot size but plant no deeper then the plant was in the pot. The roots should be un-circled and spread out in the planting hole.
Make sure you water well after planting and water about 1" per week.
You can plant Caladium in your zone about June 1.

Can I trim a few of the branches now - that have grown taller than the others? I have 2 smoke bushes about 2 years old. I bought them in Sept. of 2015. In late March (early spring) of 2017 I cut them back completely to about a 6 - 8 inch stump. Now it is June and they are beautiful. Basically round and full. They are about 3 times the size they were when purchased. Because of the way the sun hits my property - One is slightly larger than the other. One has 2 branches that are a little taller than the rest of the bush and one has four branches that are a little taller than the rest of the bush. Neither has any blooms or flowers at this time. I want to keep them as bushes but I do not want them to become very tall. Please let me know if I can snip off about 8 inches from the 6 branches that are taller than the rest of the bush without ruining the plant. If there is a charge involved - don't answer.
You'll want to wait until winter or early spring to trim smoke bushes as doing it now can expose them to many pests and diseases. This article should help

Our Smoke Bush has produced a huge number of flowers this year. It did so last year as well and the flowers, and hence seeds, spread like crazy. Is it safe to cut the flowers back to reduce the shedding mess and if so, when? Thanks in advance.
This bush does reseed freely. Removing the flowers may be removing the prettiest bark of your plant, though you can cut them back before they turn to seed.
