I have my shallots growing pretty well with good bulbs then they suddenly just stopped growing.Did they lack fertilization?Or is it another factor.I dont see any sign of pests in my plants.1
I will need to know some information first. Can you tell me what area you are in? As well as watering habit, fertilization, and anything else about their environment that you can. I will be more than glad to help:
Due to unusual spring weather this year my shallots sprouted top sets. They have affected the development of the bulb dramatically. I have never seen this happen before. Their appearance has affected the development of the bulb. Should I break off the scape when the set appears? Should I let them develop and possibly plant them? Are they edible? Do they make viable sets for next season planting?
It is likely due to due to cold or other stress. Being biannual, a cold spell fools the bulb into thinking it's been winter and then, when the weather turns warm, they produce a flower. You can try removing the flower and then as the stem dries, lift these bulbs; though small, they are certainly edible.
Replanting these is not likely viable.
how deep to dig? my soil is 50% clay. What do I need to add for best results next year. I want to grow from seed this time.

In England, what is the equivalent of the fertilizer mentioned in the answer to my query? It says feed with fertilizer 5 kg of 5-5-5 to each 3 mtr row. What does the 5-5-5 relate to and comprise of, please?
Those numbers indicate how much nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are in the fertilizer. These are called n-p-k values and they will mean the same thing regardless of where you are located. Got shallot multipliers instead of green onion multipliers. Have pulled them but they have a very hard stalk. I am drying them in my greenhouse but now what? Do I cut off the hard stalk and store them or leave it on until I use them? Live in zone 3.

I live in Southern California in an apartment with an outside balcony and I have strong morning direct sun. I would like to know how to plant and take care of shallots.
Here is a link to several articles that will help you grow shallots:
One bulb will make about 6 green onions. And if let grow until dried you can dig up and separate and plant again
We do not recommend specific places to purchase, but I could suggest looking at your local nurseries. Alternatively, you can look to online vendors on Ebay, Amazon, or Etsy.
