How can I stop the birds from drilling holes in my saguaro cactus? thanks eey
Birds can be sensitive to hot peppers. I have kept them away by boiling sliced hot peppers in water. Let this cool, and strain it into a spray bottle. Spray this once a week or so, and nothing will come near it. Just be sure not to get this in your eyes, mouth, or anywhere really.
Our church has a saguaro cactus that is about 22 feet high with multiple arms. It must have received too much water in past years as the coating around the core is sloughing off and the lower arms (each weighing several hundred pounds) are breaking off.The large core that is exposed seems very solid and hard so I don't see a danger of the entire plant falling onto the church during a wind storm. Of course the lower 6 feet looks ugly as the outer casing has rotted off.Is there anything we can do to save this beautiful plant or is it destined to die and we must remove it? Thank you! I recommend you contact a qualified Arborist in your area to inspect this beautiful specimen.
A large cactus can fall without any warning if it has developed rot.
Your County Extension Office may also have a list of specialist in your area.
I have had this cactus since the second grade when our teacher gave us seeds as a class project and I really do not want to lose it. I've read about sulfur powder and cutting it off above the rotted section? Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.
From an Arizona publication:
Some nursery owners recommended a treatment called “digging in.’
A spoon is used to scoop out all the black gunk until healthy flesh is reached.
Then a mix of peroxide and water is used to sterilize the area. Next, it is dusted with sulfur, which is washed off after 10 to 15 minutes.
The Cooperative Extension Service suggests similar treatment, except it recommends using a sterilizing mix composed of one part household bleach to nine parts water.
Can you tell by looking at a picture of this cactus if it is diseased? I will send a photo if you can. Also what state are you in? Thanks
This is a very severe infection. There will be no saving this one. These are very well adapted to being dry for a very long time. This is usually caused by overwatering. Usually these will not need supplemental watering at all.
At the beginning of last summer I noticed that a 10' tall saguaro in my yard had started to lean. I reduced the water to the plant and moved the drip lines further away from the base. When we returned to our home this fall we noticed that it had developed a large crack at the base of the plant. I understand that this could be from over storage of water. Is there anything besides stopping the irrigation all together that I should do about the leaning or the crack?
Unfortunately, overwatering needs to be mitigated, immediately, with a fungicide. If action isn't taken, you will start to notice symptoms like these.
Leaning might be corrected by propping it with a board, or tying it up to something sturdy.
Correcting the crack won't happen. What you will have to do, though, is to control the bacteria that will take that spot over.

I am worried about my saguaro, I have lived in my home 28 years, and it was just about 6 ft tall then. It is now probably 30 feet high with 4 arms. I think that it may be having problems. Please help, it's really the only family I have left, and I love it, and the families of birds that live in it.
I highly suggest you contact The Desert Botanical Gardens, near the zoo. I am a horticulturist and worked their in the 90's. You don't mention what is wrong with your Saguaro, as far as what you say it is doing fine.

22 foot tall Saguaro in front yard is rotting on the bottom. We would like to save the Skeleton for yard decoration. How do we do it? How long will it take to skeletanize?
This link will take you to an article that will explain the process:
