I have got an area in my garden which has lovely poppies. They only last for a short time - can I plant geraniums in the same place?
They can be planted in the same area. They do not offer any benefit to each other, but they will not harm each other either. This will be fine to do.

What is the best poppy to grow in zone 5b? Will a California poppy grow well in 5b zone?
It is possible that they will grow, but they may not last long. Any of the true poppies (california poppies are misnamed, as they aren't true poppies) would be more suited for this area. There are many varieties to choose from, and I think you will find something suitable to your liking. California poppies aren't hardy in 5b but they set so much seed that new plants come back the next spring. Treat Flanders, aka Shirley poppy, Icelandic and breadseed or opium poppy as annuals that self-sow. Collect seed to be on the safe side. There are other poppies that are perennial in your zone. These are the oriental poppies with many colors and textures available. Poppies need full sun and well draining soil. Most poppy species go dormant in summer, California poppies being the exception. Hmm, I'm not clear on your question.
I'm listing links with information on the flowers you have mentioned.

The foliage was a soft sage green. The leaves and stems were smooth. Some became double bloom on their own.
It will be very hard to pin down a cultivar unless you know which one it is beforehand. The closest you can get is by looking for search terms.
What comes up based on the information that you have given me was a variety called SF127 Pink and White Giganteum Poppy.
Unfortunately there will be no good way to get the exact cultivar.
I've never seen so many buds on a single stem poppy before
There are many types of Poppies that produce several flowers per plant.
Pepperbox Poppies can grow 3 feet tall and have many flowers. What a wonderful specimen you have!
Do you mean that the same flower turned from pink to orange? Or do you mean that the previous season's seeds were pink, and this year's were orange? Can you include photos, and quite a bit more detail? This will help me to give you an answer.
In the meantime, this article will help you with their care: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/flowers/poppy/growing-poppy-flowers.htm
