July 15, 2011Q.homemade organic spray
I read w/interest your recipes on homemadel bug sprays. It seems the recipe is only making enough for a veggie patch. I need to treat some peach trees. How long will the mixture stay effective once sprayed? Also, would it be prudent to use the different recipes in order to keep the bugs off "balance" so to speak? Do I need to spray more often than is recommended by commercial sprays?

Certified ExpertA.Most homemade mixtures need to be reapplied about every 1-2 weeks or after rain or heavy dew.
There is some benefit to rotating the types of spray that you use as some pests can develop a tolerance to certain substances. Rotating can keep these pests "off balance" more often as they get use to the new treatment.

July 16, 2011Q.Ripening of Peaches
My peaches are a deep red. Some of them are soft and others are rotting on the tree. If I pick the fruit, it is very hard. Can I pick those fruits before they rot and store them to ripen?

July 16, 2011Q.Dying Peach Trees
What could be killing my peach trees, and can I turn them around? I have 2 out of 3 peach trees that are dying. The leaves are turning yellow and drying out and the fruit is shrivelling. I have had issues with this sappy stuff that comes out of the bottom of the tree and along the branches. There is also a sawdust look at the bottom of the tree. I dug up some of the stuff at the bottom and there were bug/larvae shells there. Can I save my trees, bring them back?

July 17, 2011Q.White Jelly Like Substance on My Peaches
The peaches on my peach tree have a white jelly like substance oozing out of the peaches. The peaches are also rotting on the tree. I also have ants on the tree. The peaches don't appear to be getting any larger. Should I prune it back? What sort of chemicals should I spray on the tree? The tree is about 5 years old. It is a self-pollinating peach tree. We have never been able to enjoy the fruit from it. Can you help me?

I have a Florida prince peach tree (1. 5 years old). I had 5 peaches in April. In July the leaves fell off tree. Is this normal or a problem? Tree is in Thermal, Ca. Thank You.

Certified ExpertA.This is a problem. They should not be losing leaves until the fall.
This can be caused by a few things. The two most common are fungus and underwatering.
Treat the tree with a fungicide, to take care of any fungus. Make sure that your destroy the fallen leaves. Do not compost them - either throw them away or burn them.
Increase water to the tree as well.
It should try to regrow its leaves once the issue is resolved, but may not be able to before it is suppose to go dormant. It will need some extra TLC if this is the case.

July 18, 2011Q.Peach Pit Rot
I live in Texas and have a Ranger peach tree, which produces well but every peach has rot at the pit and usually with a small white worm inside. The peaches look ok from the outside but when you cut them open, there is the problem. They are very sweet and we enjoy them, but I am getting tired of eating after worms. Can you help me?
