Repotting an orchid. The instructions on the potting medium said to trim off dead roots and cut remaining roots to 6" inches long. That seems too drastic to me. Is that correct? Should I trim the roots that are growing in the air around the plant? Are these roots supposed to be under the medium? It is a beautiful plant and has bloomed 3 times in 3 years. I don't want to do anything to hurt it. Thanks.
We recommend trimming away any dead roots, but not root pruning as you mention above.

Hi I received a Vanda orchid as a gift. It was placed in a long glass jar for about 3 months until I realised that it was not a good place for it. I took it out and hung it by the window where it gets light and a bit of sun. I noticed that there are no bright green fleshy roots, only thin light brown ones which are extremely long. I spray the roots every second day. We live in Kloof, Durban, the temperatures are a little lower than in Durban itself. I am worried that there are no new roots coming through. Any suggestions? A Vanda Orchid needs to be in a growing condition much like it would be in the outdoors.
It was good to remove it from the glass container.
You can root prune the dead or soft roots. Use sterile tools.
