I live in San Francisco, and I bought two onion sets last May (I didn't realize it was that long ago until I looked up my receipt). They were Wethersfield Red and Yellow Rock. They grew, but never formed bulbs. They're in full sun, well draining soil, and are spaced about 3 inches apart. I was wondering if you had any idea why this may be? Also, they are still in the ground, so should I pull them at this point and start over? Thank you, Brian
This article discusses some possibilities:

Planting too deeply can also inhibit bulb formation- onions should be planted very shallowly. Also, be sure the soil doesn't dry out too much and is not too compacted or rocky, since this can cause the onions to have difficult expanding.
Onions will flower the second year but not produce bulbs, so it's best to pull them and start again.
Thanks for the info!

when i plant onions they start out growing fairly well standing straight, then suddenly the leaves or stalks start twisting and fall over. they get white spots and where the spots are they eventially turn brown.

What is the name of the weed (picture attached)? And how best to deal with it? I've just read your article on Wild Spring Onions. Do you deal with this type of weed in the same way? I've tried Roundup with seems to temporarily kill the weed but it seems to grow back again. I just can't seem to kill them permanently. Many thanks.
We are not able to identify this weed.
Try digging as much of the root as you can. Weeds often have a long tap root so try to get the entire root.
You can cut the weed down as far as possible and paint the cut end with a small amount of herbicide. You can repeat that a few times to take care of a very stubborn weed.

Is there a specfic date for harvesting onions?
The specific date depends on where you live and when you planted the onions. You can look up the variety you planted to see how many days after planting they should be ready to harvest. Also see this article: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/vegetables/onion/harvesting-onions.htm
