You should determine the amount of sunlight that the areas you are planting will have.
You should also check the soil and a soil test is a good place to start.

I would also check with your County Extension Office for a list of plants and trees that are suited to your growing zone.

Planted 2 acorns in a small cylinder in case one did not germinate. Now both have germinated and are about 6" high. Would it be alright just to clip one if removing is difficult. Thanks for a reply.
I live in South Louisiana. This sapling in growing in the woods on the side of my house. I can’t find anyone who can identify it. Any ideas??
This can be very hard to do, as many of them look almost identical. It appears to be a type of red oak, which will mean that it should bear acorns around September. Again, this is my best guess, and will be very hard without being able to test its genetics. This can be expensive, and not worth the hassle.
Why is my oak tree losing green leaves in May that appear to be healthy? My tree and trees in a couple of other yards in our neighborhood appear to be doing the same, however there is the same kind of tree all up and down our street that are not having the same issue. Any ideas?
This sounds like it could be Oak decline.
This article has more information.

I would also suggest you speak with your County Extension about the issue in your neighborhood.

There is a grapefruit size yellow ball that is growing in a hole on my oak tree . what is it ??
This is a fungus of some type. Some fungus can be of no concern, though it can be symptom of bigger problems.
You may want to have the tree examined by a qualified Arborist.
Can you tell me what kind of oak tree this is that has this type of leaves i live in Arizona and it grew well until the bark got ripped off i would like to replace it but don't know what kind of oak tree this is
You actually appear to have had a Maple Tree.
I cannot id from your images, the variety.
Visit your local garden centers and nurseries to look for a suitable replacement.

plant suggestions with river rock in areas where pin oak roots prevent growing grass?
Shading as well as root density and competition for water and nutrients may be responsible for the suppression of grass. The same conditions will make it difficult to grow other plants.
Consider mulching the soil surface with wood chips or commercial mulch material instead of using river rock. The mulch will have a more beneficial effect for the soil fertility and the trees.
