We have a sweetbay and a Jane magnolia tree but the look more like bushes or shrubs than trees. They don't have any single main trunk We've had them about 12 years. Why do they look like that when they are supposed to be trees ?

Just moved into a North Carolina home and have two 7 year old magnolia trees. Would like to know the type it is and also if it can be trimmed. Thanks
The trees are southern magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora). They can be trimmed, but be conservative. Clean the interior canopy of dead branches, correct structural defects as best you know how, light thinning and shaping is okay. Extreme topping and side pruning that exposes the interior woody structure to sunburn would be detrimental.

There is a rather large Magnolia tree growing outside of my condominium. It is approximately 30 to 40 feet tall. I am wondering if the tree could be responsible for the cracks in my garage floor which is made of cement.
It certainly is possible. Ask your condo association management to arrange an inspection. If the tree is in common area then the management should take responsibility for damage and repairs.
Hello, I have 6 people that want some of my pods. I am not sure when to pluck these from the tree. Is it time of year or, does the pod have to have a full pink color? I love my tree but do not have a green thumb. I put an ad in Craigslist & six people are waiting in the wings. My tree is 12 years old. This is all I know about Magnolias. I do pick the flowers & set them in water in my house. They last for days & I have a sweet fragrance in my house. You need to pick them in the morning as they only last a day in the sun. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, ep
Here are some tips for harvesting magnolia seed pods. If your tree is a hybrid, it will not come true from seed. A clone is produced via stem cuttings.

Hi, I have a large mature Magnolia Tree out in my front yard. Other than many Woodpecker holes on the bark of the tree it seemed pretty healthy. Recently however I noticed increased dead wood drop. Upon examination I noticed a white coating on the bark. Please see pictures for reference. I really don't want to lose this tree to some pest or disease, Please help! Thanks! Sam
I am unable to zoom in on your photos to see details, but it appears that the tree may have 'magnolia scale', a sucking insect pest. If so, this may be a good time for treatment that targets the 'crawler' stage of the insect life cycle when they are vulnerable.

ey will snap from the weight. Will these bloom or should I remove them? We lost a large branch in the winter, due to heavy snow and ice. Not sure if this is related to that loss.
Those are seed pods and can be removed if they don't fall on their own. If you are concerned about losing more branches, consult with a certified arborist about pruning/thinning your magnolia. Mid summer to early fall is the best time to prune magnolias.
The tree was recently trimmed by so called experts. Next spring tree looked bad and lost leaves early
The poor appearance and leaf loss may or may not be due to the pruning. Excessive crown reduction and/or thinning, removal of more than 25% of the foliage, can be stressful and it takes time to recover.
You can use a 12-12-12 chemical fertilizer, but for the best for your tree, I would prefer if it were a high quality product like this, with organic materials and controlled release nutrients and a full range of major and minor nutrients.
