6' loropetalum planted last Fall; has been purple and thriving well; recently turned green. we have had a lot of rain here in N Texas after the big freeze last February. A section is turning brown and leaves look sick in that area. Closer look reveals a hive smaller than a golf ball with a cluster of bees. They are not honey bees.... Don't know what to do
You need to determine what kind of insect you're dealing with; wasp nests and bee hives are very different things. Here's an article about removing a wasp nest: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/pests/insects/kill-wasps.htm
If you're having trouble identifying the insect, you may want to contact your local university extension service and, perhaps, text a photo to them. If they are bees, a local beekeeping group may remove it.

As to the Loropetalum, it sounds like it got some substantial damage over the winter. You can cut the dead leaves and branches out when it's safe to do so, and then prune it next year when it's finished blooming in the spring. Here's an article that should help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/shrubs/loropetalum/pruning-overgrown-loropetalum.htm
I have a loropetalum shrub that is approximately 20 years old. It wasn't pruned at all for many years. Now when I trim it, I'm basically cutting off all of the greenery, leaving ugly, bare limbs. It seems to only have leaves on the outer edges of the bush. I would like to prune it back as much as possible and "start over" with its growth in hopes of creating a more pleasing appearance. How can I accomplish this and when should I do it?
They tolerate severe pruning, but wait till next spring, after it flowers. Here is more:

I've had these loropetalum shrubs for around 5 years. The insides are very bare with no leaves at all. Should these take a hard pruning down to help with filling them out? How far down should they be trimmed? What time of year should I prune these down? I'm in north Jacksonville, FL (zone 9 I think). Thank you, Amy
It may need fertilization as well as pruning. Prune after it flowers. Only remove about 25 percent of the shrub. Here is how:
