My son wants to plant a Kwanzan tree about 8 feet from the house in a courtyard. What advice would you give?
Since they grow to 25 feet tall, they are more often seen planted as a street tree. Eight feet is really too close to the house for a tree, 15 feet is better if you can manage it. You always want to allow for the canopy spread, so it doesn't go over the roof. Here is more on their care:

It is a mature cherry tree.
They need little pruning. Diseased or broken branches can be pruned out at any time of the year. Pruning for any other reason, such as to remove rubbing branches, should be done right after flowering. Here is more:
