    Neem oil is the most effective pesticide and is safe to use on all types of plants, including edible ones. Your cucumbers are likely affected by aphids, which secrete sweet honeydew. This is what attracts the ants, so really getting rid of the aphids will in turn get rid of the ants as well. Neem oil, again, will help with this.     Insecticidal soaps have several advantages over pesticides in that they leave no nasty residue, are natural and, therefore, non-toxic to animals and birds and do not harm beneficial insects.

    The ratio amount for neem oil listed on the label instructions is normally one ounce of neem oil per one gallon of water.

    Do you have a photo? - it would help aid in our identification. Here is one possibility, however - does it look like this:

    If so, it is a Spotted Apatelodes moth caterpillar (Apatelodes torrefacta)

    Difficult to determine from your description.

    I would advise a Neem Oil treatment, as this works as both an insecticide and fungicide.
