Wilting happens if the plants aren't getting enough water, of course, but it can also happen when the soil is waterlogged. Some hydrangeas also suffer if they are in sun during the hottest part of the day. Bigleaf (macrophylla) and oakleaf hydrangeas bloom on old wood so pruning branches now will cut off next year's blooms. My other concern about cutting it down now is that this will spur new growth. This takes a lot of the plant's energy which should be going to nourishing roots for winter. New growth at this time may be slammed by frost before it has had a chance to harden off. You end up with depleted roots and dead topgrowth. The plant is likely to recover when cooler temps arrive. Check the soil to make sure it is moist within the top inch or two of soil, provide afternoon shade during hot weather, trim dead branches if you don't have one of the 2 types I mentioned but don't give cut it down just yet. If your soil is waterlogged from excessive rain or poor drainage or if the plant just can't take afternoon sun, fall is a good time for transplanting and amending soil.

    Hello,

Thank you for sending us your gardening question. Once your cuttings have taken root, in the Fall, you can take a cutting and plant it directly outdoors. Hydrangeas usually need 6 weeks of temperatures below 65 degrees to set buds, followed by at least 6 more weeks of night time temperatures of 35 to 45 degrees. Eighty or so days after this, they flower. Expect them to take a year or two after you transplant them outdoors before they flower.

This is not the complete answer, but Hydrangeas need to be in either Ericaceous compost or acid soil. The level of acid will determine the colour of the flowers. They do not like frost, and should be pruned by simply removing the flowerhead once it has died off and then a gentle prune to maintain the size and shape you want.

This is not a typical way for a Hydrangea to send out seeds.

    Can you send an image?

In most cases seeds are formed after the flower heads fade.

You can deadhead the plants in the fall or early spring.

In a container, figure the hardy zone drops down one. So if your in zone 5, a container is exposed to zone 4 conditions.
You may want to move the container to a garage or shed after it has gone dormant.
