I have recently planted three beautiful Hibiscus plants in my garden. I live in San Diego where the weather is favorable. The downside - the leaves have begun to be attacked by something - leaving holes in the middle of the leaf of the plant. Please advise what it is - and how can I treat it.
There are a couple of different pests that it could be. If you are not seeing any bugs, I would lean towards it being slugs. They come out at night and can be difficult to spot due to this. A pan of beer placed near the base of the plant overnight will confirm whether this is the problem or not.
If it is not slugs, there are several possibilities. It could be flea beetles, Japanese beetles or caterpillars.
I would like to know if I should cut down the stems of my hardy Hibiscus after blooms are spent and fallen. The leaves are mostly browning, but I am not sure if the stems are required for the plant to nourish itself for regrowth in the spring. These hibiscus totally die off in the winter (Erie, PA).
Yes, you can cut the spent blooms but leave routine pruning until spring. Here is an article that you may find helpful: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/flowers/hibiscus/tips-for-pruning-hibiscus-plants-when-to-prune-hibiscus.htm

Instead of replanting, can the hibiscus be cut back and left in the ground for winter?
Depending on your climate, hardy hibiscus can be left in the ground throughout winter. In cooler climates additional protection may be needed, such as tarps, burlap, etc. A light trim is ok but I would wait until spring before performing any worthwhile pruning. I have 3 hibiscus plants, 2 smaller ones and one about 4 foot tall. We live in Colorado. Do we need to bring them in the house for the winter or will they survive?
If they are in pots, this would certainly make it easier, as you can place them either indoors or in a protected area. For those planted in the ground, mulch and winter wrapping of hardy varieties may be enough. I planted a hibiscus plant about 2 months ago. It gets lots of buds on it but when it starts to bloom, the flower just partially comes out and then the next day, the bloom falls off the plant. The flower never does completely open up. Any idea what I am doing wrong to cause this?
This article will help you with that: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/flowers/hibiscus/hibiscus-flowers-hibiscus-blossoms-falling-off-plant.htm
My hibiscus has tiny white bugs all over it. They are not killing the plant but I want to get rid of them. I need to plant the plant in the ground before it freezes. Any suggestions?
It could be mealybugs or white fly. Read these articles on them and if this does not sound like them, let us know and we will see what we can find.
