I planted hawthorn whips to creat a hedge all around my garden last spring. It has grown well but quite a few are very spindly and top heavy, consequently they are bowing over. Should I prune now (May) or do I need to wait? Many thanks in advance
This needs to be done during dormancy so as not to cause any damage. This article will help:

I wonder if there is treatment available to help this tree? It is planted in a stoney area and has been a bit poorly for a couple of years. All the branches are covered in tufts of Lichen. Sorry I can't send a photo but hope you can give me some help.
Lichens and trees most often enjoy a symbiotic relationship. However, if there is a noticeable overgrowth of lichen, it may mean that the tree is either under some kind of distress or that it is simply very old.

You may want to consider moving the tree to a different location. Here's an article about the best conditions for growing Hawthorns: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/hawthorn/growing-hawthorn-trees.htm
There is a clematis climbing through it and a string of battery operated lights. Could either of these be damaging the tree?
The clematis could be shading the leaves from getting full sun. It really isn't advisable to let vines grow up a tree. Here is more:

Headgear after least 10 yrs old , trunk and branched at 4’ height are 1-2.5” thick. I doubt there will be any leaves left after cutting back to 4’x4’
It is considered invasive in some areas, so it has a will to live. It can be hard pruned if it gets out of control. It is best to shape it by removing selective branches rather than shortening all the branches.

Hi, I have a beautiful English Hawthorn Tree with mildew and very few leaves. It is suggested I prune offending branches and spray with anti fungal and also to apply ammonium sulphate. Can you tell me whether this is correct and what time of year to do this? and if you have any other suggestions such as additional feeding Much obliged Ruth hopkins
You don't need to cut off any limbs. This year, remove all the fallen leaves and destroy. Next year apply a fungicide at bud break and every 10 days during wet weather. Stop spraying when weather gets dry.

Leaves have black spots
Unfortunately, your photos did not come through. I am unable to see what damage is there to assess it.
It sounds like the shrub has an infection. There are many diseases that plague this shrub. Here is an article that will help you to grow the tree, and within are links to common illnesses to the tree:

gn that there is new growth. Leaves do not appear to be diseased.
Hawthornes are susceptible to several diseases unless you have a resistant variety. They also attract several pests like scale, aphids, lace bugs, and mites. Did you check for insects? Scale can be hard to notice.
Are you fertilizing every other year? It may just be lacking some nutrients. Check your care against these care tips:
