How To Thicken Hawthorn Hedge

Question

I planted hawthorn whips to creat a hedge all around my garden last spring. It has grown well but quite a few are very spindly and top heavy, consequently they are bowing over. Should I prune now (May) or do I need to wait? Many thanks in advance
