I just bought a gardenia tree. Fed it and has been watered often but I have noticed a lot of yellow leaves. Some are full leaves and some are coming in yellow. What am I doing wrong or what am I not doing right?
It may be in over wet soil. How often do you water? Is the soil relatively moist? If so, you may need to allow it to dry out some, and if possible, improve the drainage. Yellow leaves normally signal that the plant is under some type of stress. In order to remedy the problem, you must first try to pinpoint the issue. My gardenias are not full of leaves and they look terrible. I have been looking for ways to take care of them without it costing me a lot of money, as I am a single mother. I read that if I mix 1 tablespoon of white vinegar and 1 gallon of water together and then pour on the soil around the plant it will act as a fertilizer. Is that true and, if so, how often should I do that?
I would not recommend this practice. While it does acidify the water, too much can hurt the plant. Vinegar is often used as a homemade weed killer as it is very acidic. Instead, stick with an acid-loving fertilizer (appropriate for azaleas and camellias) for your gardenia. I live in zone 6, WV, and planted two gardenia bushes last year. Never had one before, love them, but my question is about their leaves turning brown over winter. Is this normal? Have they died or will they come back later this spring? If dead, how should I have protected them? I bought them in NC and have never noticed any up here, maybe too cold in winter?
You can cut the plants back this spring; however, you should be aware that the buds may have been damaged, so the likelihood of getting flowers this year is minimal. Today I planted and watered a Jubilation Gardenia purchased from a local nursery. Should I now fertilize it with Miracid or similar fertilizer for acid-loving plants or wait for several weeks before fertilizing?
You can give it some fertilizer now but I would only do so at half strength. Once it has established in its new surroundings, you can fertilize as usual.
