When do I cut back wild fern? I understand they will come back stronger in spring.
You can cut back any damaged or brown fronds but you can allow the ferns to die back naturally.
Adding some organic material to the soil and making sure the plants have adequate watering is the best way to promote the ferns growth and natural spreading.
I purchased a fern and noticed in the saucer that the water was red. At first I thought it was from the saucer but that is not the case. Can you tell me what is causing this?
It may be a residue from potting soil or fertilizer that was used in the greenhouse.

I hate to throw my ferns away at the end of summer, as it seems like such a waste. I just can't deal with the falling leaves to bring it in. What can I do? Can you plant a hanging fern and will it die during winter?
You will need to winter over the ferns indoors but here is a link that may make it easier for you.

Should ferns be cut back in the fall? Don't know what kind they are. I think one is Ursulla Red and the others are just green and grow in the shade.
No need to cut back ferns, except the odd stem that may die back.
I grow some phenomial size ferns from June through Oct. outside. They generally double or triple in size. I live in the woods and have found the right spot for light and shade. In a week or so, we will have frost and I have to bring them inside. As good conditions for growth outside, indoors is bad. Electric heat, low humidity and either too much (French doors) or not enough light. I don't overwater and fertilize once or twice a winter. My kill rate is 80 percent and those that make never thrive the next summer. Ideas? Thanks.

Can you bring ferns indoors from patio after summer and how to transfer successfully? I want to bring my ferns indoors and want to know if I should trim them back and where to hang them.

Live in NE Ohio, electric heat, relative humidity around 40-50 percent, temp 68F, south or north facing windows, sit in a bed of gravels that evaporate 2 cups a day, water once a week with both well and filtered water, mist daily. Yellow condition of a leaf soon turns into the entire stem dying. Help.
It can be difficult to give ferns the humidity and temperatures that they prefer indoors during the winter months.
Here is a link with care information.
