I have been given a bag of daffodil bulbs. Can I put them in the ground now? I have no way to store them. I live in Hammond, Indiana.
Yes, you can plant them now but don't expect to see any blooms, at least not until next season. Planting them in fall will allow the bulbs to go through their natural cooling period. Is it best to leave daffodil bulbs in ground after flowering or dig up and dry for next year?
This usually depends on where you live. In northern areas, daffodil plants can usually be left alone and will return the next growing season. In southernmost regions, they are either treated as annuals or dug up and stored until the return of cooler temps.
Why didn't my daffodils produce any flowers this year? They did great last year. It's been about 4 years and they were thick, so I transplanted them in the fall. I put one bulb in a hole pointy side up and roots down. I just don't know what I did wrong.
This could be due to any number of things. If they did not have sufficient chilling, then their blooming will be poor. If the plants are overcrowded, then blooming will be decreased. Light and drainage can be issues as well, but only if nearby trees, etc. have recently changed would this affect you. Finally, the soil could be lacking phosphorus, which is important for flowering. You can mix bone meal in the soil around your plants to add more phosphorus. Would daffofil bulbs react adversely to having shallot bulbs grown in between their rows? I have a lot of empty space between daffodil rows but not a lot anywhere else.
No, this shouldn't affect the daffodil bulbs as long as you're careful not to overwater the area, which could lead to the bulbs rotting. Also, you would have to be careful when harvesting your shallots so as not to disturb the dormant daffodil bulbs.
When (now or fall) and how (depth) do you plant daffodils that were purchased this spring already in the blooming stage but are now starting to die off.
While you can plant them in the ground now, you may want to wait for fall so the bulbs go through their natual cooling period. I just had to dig up some of my fading daffodils because I'm putting in a water fountain. I placed them elsewhere. Any chance of them surviving this transplant? I live in northern Massachusetts and the nights are still cool and we're getting lots of rain. Thank you.
As long as they were planted in a suitable location with adequate drainage, they should be fine. They will continue to fade and go dormant but should return next year.
I thought giving blooming daffodils in a pretty container would make a great Christmas gift. How long does it take for them to grow/bloom and do I have enough time for the holidays? Thanks in advance.
If the bulbs are pre-chilled, they take about 6-8 weeks to grow and bloom. If they are not pre-chilled, you will need to chill them for 6-12 weeks and then plant them (and wait 6-8 weeks for them to bloom).
