I've had a white butterfly bush for ten years that was healthy the first year. Each year since, it has grown from a tiny sprout in the spring but never gets a foot high before the leaves turn brown and it apparently goes dormant until the following spring. It's been in a shady area and full sun with the same results. Can you help? Thanks.
It sounds like it may have a reoccurring fungus that kills the leaves but not the plant. Start treating the plant with a fungicide once every 1-2 weeks. It should start to regrow leaves this year. Next spring, start with a fungicide as soon as you see growth. Once you get through spring with regular treatments of fungicide, the fungus should not return.
I live in Washington state. I have a Butterfly bush. It looks healthy, very tall but it didn't bloom very long. Would they be short bloomers by nature, or does it lack something in the soil? Thanks for your help.
It coud be lacking phosphorus, which is necessary for healthy blooms. You can use a phosphorus rich fertilizer or add bone meal to the soil around your bush.

When do I cut back my butterfly bush?
Here is an article that you may find helpful: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/shrubs/butterfly-bush/butterfly-bush-pruning-how-to-prune-a-butterfly-bush.htm
I live in Brodnax, Va. I have 2 butterfly bushes. I read the how to prune on your website. I am confused. It is around 60 to 80 degrees in the day here now and down to about 40 at night. Have not had a frost yet. Can I prune them now and how far back should I prune them? Thanks, Linda Peebles
Pruning should be done in spring and at that time you can take up to a third of the shrub off.
I live in New Bedford, Ma and we had some strong winds yesterday, thanks to Hurricane Sandy. My Butterfly bush is tilted over so that it's touching the ground and a large root is exposed. What do I do? I've been thinking of pruning it to take off some of the weight and then staking it. I know you should not prune until spring. What do you folks suggest? Thanks, Rachelle
Butterfly bushes are pretty hardy. I would try to rebury as much of the rootball as possible. And, yes, to reduce stress to the plant, I would go ahead and prune it back.
In the spring, give it some bone meal to help it recover its roots.
I live in southeast Kentucky and the ice and snow that we received earlier broke my butterfly bush off close to the ground. Will the bush survive? Is there anything that I can do? Thanks.
These plants recover quite well from drastic pruning and should regrow from the roots. It will likely not be as big as it was last year, but should grow back to near its original size by the end of the summer.
