Q.When and How to Prune Butterfly Bushes

I live in Brodnax, Va. I have 2 butterfly bushes. I read the how to prune on your website. I am confused. It is around 60 to 80 degrees in the day here now and down to about 40 at night. Have not had a frost yet. Can I prune them now and how far back should I prune them?
