Why are the leaves of my bird of paradise plant going brown? The plant has just had four beautiful flowers on it.
It is possibly a humidity or watering issue. Make sure that the plant is getting enough water and add some humidity by placing it on a pebble tray filled with water.
I want to take a cutting of a yellow bird of paradise and plant it. Can this work, and how do I go about it and have a nice healthy plant?
Sorry, but these plants are normally propagated through seeds or division rather than from cuttings.
I have three giant birds of paradise in my front yard that have grown to over 9 feet to the tip of the tallest foliage. I want to move them to another area in my yard, but the root system seems really deep. How deep would the root be for a plant that size? What is the best way to move them without incurring damage to them?
Since they are so large, you may want to consider pruning them back prior to moving them. Make sure you dig up as much of the roots system as possible and replant them in similar locations and at the same depth as the previous location they were taken from, watering thoroughly. My plants are not growing at all. They have been stagnant for several years. I use fertilizer and water regularly. Nothing has worked.
If it has been cool, this may be stunting them a bit. Also, if the light conditions where they are have changed over the years (trees got bigger, buildings were put up that block light, etc.), they may have too little light.
We covered our bird of paradise (orange flower) last winter with plastic, due to many freezes, and must have left it on too long as now much of the plant has dead leaves. How far down to I prune the branch? Some look like there is a new branch coming out, and I have cut it just above that. Should I prune all dead branches at once? We live near Sacramento, CA.
You can prune out anything that is brown, as this is dead. Since you are seeing new good growth, this means the plant will recover just fine.
How can you tell when a Bird of Paradise bloom is about to open?
The plant will begin to form buds. If you are having problems with getting your bird of paradise to bloom, this article should help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/flowers/bop/bird-of-paradise-blooms.htm
Our plant has reached over 20 feet high with approximately 12 stalks/trunks. We have cut it back a lot. When cutting the stalks, should they be cut to the ground, dug out or what?

You need to dig them out, when a plant gets that big you have to separate them
