If you live in an area that freezes in the winter, and I see you do (zone 5b), begonias will need to be overwintered. I believe yours is a tuberous begonia. Here is how to overwinter them:

Technically, it is hardy in your area, but only barely. In order to ensure that it comes back, you will want to mulch, heavily.

Hello! Our elderly uncle recently moved across the country and one of his plants died. I would like to replace it as a surprise for Christmas and was wondering if you could help with the ID. I think it might be a begonia. I have attached a photo. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and hope everyone there has a good holiday! -Beth
It is a begonia. Here are descriptions based on leaf shape. This one could be a Rex begonia. There are so many varieties though, we aren't able to pick the exact one. You may need to visit a local nursery and ask them about a possible variety.

My begonia is in a clay pot but only fills half of it. I'd like to fill in with something that will grow well with it.
Most houseplants seem to play nice with the Begonia, actually! As long as you choose something that is not particularly fast growing, it will likely take to just about any houseplant that you plant with it. There are exceptions, like with Kalanchoe, but there aren't many.
