There was a mature bamboo in the garden when I moved into new home. It is thriving but lots of dead stems on it over winter. Do we leave this in tact or remove at base to let new growth? Would appreciate learning how to look after this beauty. Kind regards Maureen wright
You can cut any dead stems at ground level with a horizontal cut.

Does bamboo grow in shady areas?
Most Bamboos can handle sun or shade equally well.
I've heard that you shouldn't transplant bamboo in the spring or summer. I have the opportunity to get some bamboo now but I have to dig it up from someone's yard and transplant it the the planter on my porch. Neal
I've attached an article that will help;

I got a couple of plants from a friend, which after growing a bit have started getting dried at the bottom along the stem and leaves. The leaves and stem at the top are all green. How do I maintain the plant? Refer Pic1 Another question is about another similar sapling that I have. I am not sure if it can be grown in a jar of water. Refer Pic2 Please help. A week back I planted two bamboo plants in a big pot filled with soil. They are kept at a shady area but received some direct sunlight for a few hours up till the next day. Later the leaves have turned noticeably dry and brown. Now the leaves on the right one are all dead and gone. Is it because of the direct sunlight, over-fertilization or transplant shock? Can you please have a glimpse of the attached (recent) picture and tell me what is wrong with the plants? Will new leaves come from existing cane? Thank you (I have installed a plastic shade right above them and also giving the plants extra water to flush out the excess fertilizer)-JIMMY https://www.flickr.com/photos/143037259@N02/shares/h5egvP
There are SO many reasons that a bamboo plant turns brown!
Fertilizing bamboo is one of those things you need to be very careful about, as is excess water. Your best option at this point might be to follow the instructions in this article to re-pot them and continue to keep them in the shade:

It looks like the plants are leggy and it is most likely do to improper light conditions.

Had these 3 bamboo fargesia plants for 2-3 years now. As you can see, they are too big for the borders. Can you identify variety by the photos? Would like to take them out or split them in half and relocate. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanking you in anticipation. Audrey
