Q.Separating Yucca roots and replanting

Zone New York state; Hudson valley | siddharth added on May 9, 2014 | Answered

My Yucca plant got sick – either due to neglect or harsh winter this year. I would like to separate the roots because they otherwise grow wild. How do I do that and replant separated roots?

Just use your shovel to dig around the roots, and a hand saw to cut the roots into pieces. If the roots are dry or mushy and/or brown all the way through, they're dead. If the roots pieces are still alive, put them in a place not too close to where people will walk. You can do an experiment - plant them at different depths to see which sprouts best.
