Just use your shovel to dig around the roots, and a hand saw to cut the roots into pieces. If the roots are dry or mushy and/or brown all the way through, they’re dead. If the roots pieces are still alive, put them in a place not too close to where people will walk. You can do an experiment – plant them at different depths to see which sprouts best.
