Q.Rose For The Front Of Our House

Zone GU32 3pj | Anonymous added on May 22, 2021 | Answered

Hi, we have a west facing wall on the front of our house and we would love a rose to grow on it and over our door and brick /tiled roof porch. We would love recommendations of thornless roses to grow. We are thinking a yellow rose would be nice, we have a red brick house, but we are open to suggestions. We want a country cottage effect, there are other cottages on our road with roses and we think they look wonderful. We only want it to grow to the height of the porch for ease or pruning etc. We would love fragrance if possible but length of flowering season is more important to us. Any recommendations of a reliable rose to grow would be really appreciated. And any other tips for such a project would be most welcome.

There are two rosebushes that come immediately to mind. One is a Yellow Climbing rose, the Yellow Lady Banks climbing rose is very nice and quite vigorous and slightly fragrant. My top recommendation for thornless roses has to be a beautiful pink rose named Thérèse Bugnet. She is fragrant and loves to bloom. She is more a shrub rose but could work for your needs. The others that come to mind are climbing Graham Thomas, a David Austin English rose, does have thorns though but is beautiful with a real wow factor. Another in that line is one named Summertime. Thorns here too though. Thornless and yellow are hard to come by in strong healthy roses.
