Japanese Maple Trees

Q.pest or parasite on Japanese maple and Camillia.

Zone Manchester, England | Anonymous added on May 21, 2020 | Answered

small 2-3mm “things” attached to my Japanese maples, they look like tiny browm “barnicals or limpets” they have no head or legs and do not move. They are mainly on the stems and branches. I have been “bursting or squashing” them, my largest maple (they are all in containers) has a trunk of about 2″ diameter and the bottom part of it is covered in them.
My first attention to them was whilst looking why all the leaves on one side of a plant had died.
I have also got a Camillia that has flowered and now that is also full of them.
What are they and how do I get rid of them?
Many thanks
