Is there something wrong with it? Can I take the pointy bark off to make it smooth?

I searched references for a long time and did not find anything about your "pointy bark." I would call your local nursery or the local Cooperative Extension office and ask them about the trunk.

It is recommended you change the soil in vegetable containers each year if they are heavy feeders such as tomatoes. Other containers that hold healthy plants can just be refreshed with about 1/3 new soil.
