Can you tell me how to tell the difference between mushrooms and toadstools?

There is no scientific difference between the two; mushroom or toadstool.
The words are used interchangeably to refer to the same fungus.

In some written work a mushroom may be referenced as the edible fungus and toadstool used for the poisonous fungus.
