Q.Is this a treatable fungus?

Zone Edmonton, AB | Anonymous added on August 26, 2020 | Answered

We have many Poplar trees growing beautifully but I’ve noticed this year that one has a partial area at its base where a fungus-looking disease is growing. What is this and how can I correct the issue before it affects the whole tree? The leaves etc are all fine/healthy. Thank you

That looks like Crown Gall...caused by bacteria. There is no cure, and infected trees must be removed completely so as not to spread to surrounding trees. This destructive disease has a treatment in the works, but it is not totally effective yet. This treatment includes a genetically altered close relative of the bacteria, called Galltrol.
